Good day to all!
Bit of background: I got this 4790K rig (specs on the sig) that somehow had both RAM sticks die (as reported by the onboard Q-Code), but is otherwise working last I checked. I gave it to my sister as a WFH rig since I got my new R7 3700x rig up and running. It has served me well since 2015 but started acting up 3 weeks after my sis was using it. I was hoping it's just the RAM that has gone belly-up, otherwise..
Now to the present: I've been eyeing to make a DIY NAS since my dual-bay Synology is nearing full capacity and approaching its 3rd year running. I found an old mini-tower (NZXT Source 220) that has eight 3.5" bays, so the case is accounted for. So now I'm torn on either acquiring new DDR3 RAM for the 4790K in 2021 or just getting a newer set that will potentially be more power-efficient and has readily available parts. I'm thinking either Intel 10300/AMD R5 3400G, 16GB DDR4, NVMe, the bare essentials. This new rig won't need PCI-E GPU, but I might need at least a couple of full-size PCI-E slots for the HBA and potential, rather eventual 10GbE card.
So how do you think should I approach this: new rig or retrofit old one? I'll try either Linux or FreeNAS/UnRAID on it.
P.S. For drives, I got my sights on getting at least four 8TB drives, either HGST or Ironwolf. Got any suggestions on where to buy them for sub-10k per drive?
