Raid 0
« on: July 30, 2017, 11:01:03 AM »
Anybody tried raid 0 with 3 drives? Hows the performance?
I am thinking of getting 3 WD gold 1TB drives.

I have tried 4drives raid-0 and compared to an SSD, I would never go back to mechanical drives as my system drive.

"Performance" is quite a vague term here, since it really depends on your workload and if you want a perceived performance or just high number on whatever benchmarking software you use or server application specific performance metrics.

for perceived performance - say using it as a System drive and just how fast anything loads, then IMHO, there's no difference between a single drive or a raid-0 drive with n-number of drives if it's a mechanical drive, since you will be stuck with the same latency when reading small fragments

for measured performance, google has a ton of those, and they basically say the same stuff, e.g. for raid0, N=number of drives, X=IOPS, performance=N*X

No doubt about SSD drives as I have also have my main workstation with an 850 Pro on a single drive and 2 850s as raid 0. The performance of mechanical drives have no match to ssds for that matter. I work on graphics and video with my main workstation. I have my second workstation in the office to work with my files as well. How I wish I can have a full ssd setup but it so expensive for space and speed. This is my main reason I want to have a raid setup on my second workstation because I was hoping that a raid setup would speed things a bit. I intend to have at least 2TB of workable space thats why I thought of raid 0 of 3x 1TB of WD gold data center drives or would a 2 x 2TB WD gold drives would do?

Firecuda SSHDs are part of the hybrids right? Would you recommend these drives for RAID 0? I cant find any reviews regarding these drives for RAID performance.

I usually have a raid 1 for important stuff I care about on my local PC but should always back up regularly.     Media server has a mix of raid 5 and raid 6 for redundancy.
