just an opposing pov:

i used to have at least 2 rigs doing folding, but after a while i've started feeling both myself and future generations would be better off if i leave the PC and its unused cycles alone so it could go into power-down. the tradeoff here is the guaranteed "environmental benefits" versus possible "folded protein benefits". i've decided to go for what's certain, and it saves on the electric bills too.

actually sir splerdu we are not obliged to fold 24/7. the goal is to use idle cpu cycles to finish a WU not to fully dedicate your rig just to do folding. you can turn on and off your rig and let the F@H console finish a WU.

I also contributed to a similar project before.. SETI@home. Searching for little green men, I did not accomplish. :)

i was/am still using seti@home on some computers. but i stopped in the house after 9100+ units. lakas a kuryente. i think i save about 500 per month since i stopped.

pero i still have some seti@homes running somewhere. i will upgrade to boinc sometime in the future. boinc is similar to folding but you can be assigned different types of work -- cancer research, seti, etc. depending on what you chose.

Is it giving out covid work units now?

I read some posts that servers are overwhelmed with the response and having trouble giving out work units.

I started this week and I only got 1 work unit related to covid19.

Other work units were for other diseases. Work unit right now is for SARS.

folding with my brother (mixxxx).  can't run my computer 24/7 though. papatayin ako sa taas ng electric bill, so I just fold while playing games.
