Instead of just the brand, I usually look at if it has a high EER (energy efficiency ratio) and whether the compressor is made by Matsushita (maker of Panasonic).  Sales people usually say if it is.

Ayaw niyo ng inverter type sir? That would be cheaper in the long run. And yes, go for Matsushita compressors.
We plan to remain kings.

kelvinator.  7 years-old and still runs well and quietly.  had to replace its starting capacitor a few weeks ago. heavy usage on summer months only, though.

panasonic compressor rin ba gamit nito?

AFAIK, Kelvinator, Carrier and Condura (all made by Concepcion Industries) use Matsushita compressors.  By the way, I think you could buy from Concepcion Industries factory (along East Service Road between Sucat and Alabang) directly.  I remember nag-inquire kami about 5 years ago by phone and around 1,000 pesos cheaper ang factory price.  Yun nga lang you'd have to pick it up yourself.

Had an inverter type AC sa work place ko before...doesnt have the annoying on and off cycle you get from typical ACs. mas consistent din yung temp niya.

...well if it's any consolation we have a 1/2 HP Samsung that we used for more than 10yrs., the only thing we needed to replace was the rotary switch for the on/off/ speed mode

I replaced my old 1HP panasonic window type with a 1.5HP inverter-type.

saves 1k-2k (compared to old aircon, depending on the month).  less than 2 years bawi na.

kaso dahil alam namin na matipid siya, mas madalas kami ngayon magbukas nang aircon.  gastos pa din! hehehehe

Re: Whats the best portable Aircon, 1.5HP or higher
« Reply #13 on: May 05, 2010, 02:37:42 PM »
Change of plans, we might be looking into a portable aircon or split type instead of a window type unit.

For portable I saw a 1.5HP model ( Union ) at SM appliances and it has a cooling capacity of 13,000BTu ( whatever that means ) and eats 1,300watts! The portable feels like it can only cool in a specific direction since it also dumps the heat on the room it is in. Im not sure if its really a good way to cool down a room.

it's easier and cheaper to maintain a window-type AC than a split-type one though.

Demo posted yesterday that he can't make a hole in the wall, hence the change in plan from window to portable type.

@Demo
Unless you have French windows (or the room in question has no windows at all), I think you could make some room by removing some glass from your window.  or if you go for split-type, maliit na butas lang naman yun for the tube.

@baktol

There is a possibility of removing some glasses om the window and let the window type AC sit on a thick rubber strip so it absorb most of the vibration.

any update?

i'm in the market right now for a portable aircon din kase eh.

no other options.  the room is right in the middle of the house.  as in all four walls, loob ng bahay ang other side.

is one side of your room adjacent to a bathroom?  a split-type AC with the water drain leading to the adjacent bathroom could be an option.  ung sa amin kasi, may abang na small hole for a split type to drain water into the bathroom which is adjacent to the living room.

i don't think portables can cool down a room as efficiently as fixed AC's
