Pinguy looks great, even better than Mint imho. Hopefully a version based on Meerkat will come out soon.
+1!

I mean, look at the screenies I posted here. Way better looking than Mint, unless you go configure Mint of course.

new Mint RC comes out today, they're ditching the green look for a brushed metal look. any thoughts?

Down linuxmint.com at the moment eh. Sana they took a hint or two from Pinguy.

--edit--
Just saw the Mint site. Not really exciting. But I'll download it still.

am now running Ubuntu 10.10 full time on my home rig. I was surprised by its performance when I installed it on our office T61 laptop so I decided to try it on my own rig. I still need to configure my Antec Veris VFD.

btw, i'm using the FGLRX driver from ATI on my 5770. I'll try to install windows games via wine and test it. if it turns out good,  I guess I won't be seeing Windows in a while. haha

hey please tell me how your experience with fglrx goes. are you using the latest version (based on catalyst 10.10)?

i haven't tried to run any windows games yet, but i am having trouble with Winamp's app window (via wine)...

could not display the media library pane. same thing with virtual dj.

How about trying out the alternatives like Rhythmbox or Amarok? If you want a winamp-like clone there's XMMS.

now using Rhythmbox instead. i tried to Amarok, but there was an error when opening it...

im lost on how to configure it, doesn't play any music files. =[

EDIT:
finally got to install Frozen Throne via Wine. it seems laggy when during battle (using the highest settings)

the above screen shot is at 1600x1200 (the highest available res for the game, im using a 1920x1200 res monitor)

yep fglrx 8.78 is catalyst 10.10. did u just install the proprietary driver via Jockey (the restricted drivers tool)?

also, how is video playback? is there tearing?

yup, installed the driver via Jockey. video playback is sometimes so-so, there are some flashing / flickering (tearing?) very noticeable on fast scenes and gun fight scenes. also, i don't know if it's my browser or not, but playing youtube video is not that smooth as that of windows, a bit laggy and browsing / cuing the video becomes very slow. hope that this could be improved. i am more inclined on sticking with Ubuntu for a while. =]

EDIT:
after much googling and trying the different solutions found on the net, i finally found one solution that worked for me.

I did the following changes...
In VLC:
-I changed the output mode to X11 video output instead of the "default" settings
-changed the XVideo Adaptor number from -1 to 1

In CompizConfig:
-go to General Options ->Display Settings and put a tick / check mark on the Sync to VBlank option.

In Catalyst:
-under More Settings change the Wait for Vertical Refresh from OFF to ALWAYS ON

I also read that you can also edit the XVideo Adaptor in your X config for overall display improvement (for games), but i have yet to try it.

that's great. currently installed Meerkat onto my external hdd, will test tomorrow. still trying to figure out how to add it to the windows boot menu (using EasyBCD but ran into some problems).

care to post the links you found for our reference? =)

EDIT: got to dual boot meerkat and my win7... and installed fglrx. so far so good, it's awesome! :) hopefully this serves as a useful boot/recovery drive. its like bringing your own pc around lol

cool thanks Sephiroth.

just installed Mint 10 on my Dell Inspiron 15R - after installation of proprietary drivers everything works just fine :)

PinguyOS looks awesome but it looks a bit too heavy for my taste. Also read some problems in the forums about the proprietary drivers not being picked up for some reason.

In case you're using Ubuntu with a mobo with an AMD 880 northbridge:  try updating to kernel 2.6.36.  Older kernels bork it up as if it were a hardware issue.  Certainly freaked me out with my new MSI 880GMA-E45.
