why not the tamron 17-50 2.8 also?

+1 on this, although the friend seems to have the budget for the 17-55, so that's what I suggested

he's looking for L-series lens hehe and right now he considered selling his XS for T1i upgrade dahil gusto niya 720p video rec  :D di muna siya mag venture ng high end DSLR body dahil kulang sa budget  hehe.

it's true... bitin nga ang rebel body paired with an L but sometimes you have to make do with what you have.  just because it feels bitin on the hand doesn't mean the camera + lens combo is already a bad idea.  what matters more is the photo and not whether it feels good on the hand or is balanced in weight.

hmm... pero diba bitin rin ang video capability ng T1i?

why does he want an L?  if it's IQ, the 17-55 definitely holds its own against the other L's it's just that it doesn't have weather sealing and the red ring.  range-wise, the 17-55 is really ideal for crop bodies.

i don't know why he likes the "luxurious" lens hehe siguro influenced ng ads/friends/photo mags and online reviews. he only wants a little of video recording on DSLR as added bonus to his hobbies daw. hmm if I were him I would rather buy the 17-55 and stay with XS and have some spare money to spend on other things para sulit.  tama kayo re L-lens on XS dahil super heavy ang mga yun at ang gaan2x ng XS parang di bagay hehe.

san merong tammy 17-55 canon mount? might look to replace my kit lens as the auto-focus no longer works.

Meron din sa vet specialist ng tamron lens. mas mahal nga lang kasi 2 years warranty daw.

Sigma has upgraded it's 17-70 F2.8-4.5 DC Macro, it now has OS and HSM...

http://www.dpreview.com/news/0912/09120402sigma1770OSHSM.asp

if the IQ is as good as the first version and it's priced just like their 24-70 F2.8 EX, i'd definitely sell my 17-70 and upgrade to this version.
