what's a good lense to use for the singapore f1 night race? Was planning on renting a telezoom lense or will a 55-250mm f3.5-5.6 suffice?

I don't think ISO 800 will suffice for that.  5.6 na nga ang aperture at the tele end, gabi pa yung setting.  I don't even think ISO 1600 with 2.8 is enough
NO! toooooo......slow at low light. specially at night.

thou you can still make it work by keeping your ISO @ 800 or more

if you had a 200mm f/2.0... you can get away with ISO400 - 800 @1/500s, but 300mm @ f/5.6 is doable if you can push the ISO up, and you're willing to accept noise.

what I do when I'm trying to get and idea of lighting conditions on some event, I search on flickr and look at the EXIF data.

for example, searching for "singapore f1 night" i came across this pic. (not mine)

don't rely on the AF of the 55-250 if you're gonna be shooting F1.  better pre-focus your shots in MF mode and just have your finger ready on the shutter.

From r8dhex's link, I read that you'll be shooting through a fence. That'll be frustrating with AF.

Qualifying would also be held at the same time as the race.  I'll definitely bring a tripod with me.

dean is right, if there's a fence, you should pre focus on a spot on the track. Maybe switch to back-button focusing

But how many people can afford a $6,0000 lens? ;)

^ Agree. That's why I said "if", I did mention that it's still doable if he accepts a little more noise. Can't get anything for free, but ISO is cheaper than that lens.
