Milenyo could hit Metro Manila -- PAGASA

Classes suspended in capital region, 5 provinces

GMA7, INQ7.net
Last updated 08:35pm (Mla time) 09/27/2006

Malacañang announced that it was suspending classes at all levels, including post-graduate, in Metro Manila and in Cavite, Batangas, Rizal, Laguna and Bulacan as public storm warning signal number 1, meaning winds of 30 to 60 kilometers per hour (kph) was raised over the capital region.

Nathaniel Cruz, chief of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration’s (PAGASA) weather branch, told GMA Network’s 24 Oras that Milenyo, which was packing winds of 130 kph with gusts of up to 160 kph, was 50 kilometers east of Legazpi City, Albay and moving west northwest at 13 kph.

He said Metro Manila and the Southern Tagalog provinces may expect to feel the strength of the typhoon on Thursday night until early Friday morning as he urged residents to take precautions against floods.

In an earlier television interview, Education Secretary Jesli Lapus said the suspension of classes might extend to Friday depending on the weather conditions.

The Office of Civil Defense said Milenyo, which blew through the Visayas and Bicol regions Wednesday, had left some 3,400 passengers stranded in various seaports.

Storm signal number 3, meaning winds of between 100 to 185 kph, remained over Samar Island, Catanduanes, the Camarines provinces, southern Quezon, Marinduque, Masbate, Albay, and Polillo, Burias and Ticao islands.

Signal number 2 (60-100 kph winds) was up over Romblon, the rest of Quezon, Batangas, Laguna, Rizal, Oriental Mindoro, Leyte and Biliran Island.

Aside from Metro Manila, places under signal number 1 were Occidental Mindoro, Cavite, Bulacan, Bataan, Pampanga, Nueva Ecija, Aurora, Southern Leyte, Camotes Island, northern Cebu, northern Iloilo, northern Antique, Aklan, Capiz, and Dinagat and Siargao islands.

I love the smell of napalm in the morning!

Subtropical ridge that shifted the path of the storm downward closer to Manila has strengthened further. This caused the storm to move westward from Bicol. The storm center may miss Manila and strike Batangas instead.
