no, but it's common practice in tech forums to show rig specs in sigs.

it's to let others know you share a common ground when discussing problems or when troubleshooting.

or it could be used to show some pussies what big dicks we have.

no to animated gifs on avatars

I think some people don't seem to know that animated avatars are not allowed.

Maybe we should turn this into a sticky. Some people still don't know the rule on avatars.

Yes, please do make this a sticky, and add it to the rule thread, if you please.

I was PM'd today by a moderator with this message:

Quote
please remove animated GIF on sig. thanks.

I did so, but I asked for a reason anyway.  I think I made a reasonable request since I have not been regularly reading all the threads, but I do know that there is nothing in the rules thread in the Lounge about animated sigs.

Also I had had that sig for quite a while now (several days? a week or more? not sure) and had posted on  a few threads, and no one had called my attention to it.

Later I received this message from the same mod:

Quote
i said remove the animated gif on your sig

No reason given, no explanation.  No answer to my request.

Take a good, long look.  Does that look animated to you?

My reply to the mod in question:
look again.

and give me a reason, next time you ask something.

and it better not be "because I said so".

I complied with the request despite the lack of explanation/justification.  It was only after I got the second message that I decided to run a search, and found this thread.

So I would like to request a formal statement saying what is and isn't allowed, and I would like to suggest that it be posted in an accessible area, in order to spare members and moderators from misunderstandings like this one.

@RascalKing
For starters, this is a very clear misunderstanding. But I do want to point out some things:

I think I am the one you are pointing the finger at, and I'm not washing my hands off of it. I'm pretty much ok when someone wants to criticize my method of informing people what the rules are.

I admit the rule is pretty much floating, since it has only been recent that pictures have been allowed to be put in the sigs. Although this is the fact, I don't think my admonishing you because of the animated sig is unjustified. My philosophy in this is that I follow a certain and simple rule: Ignorance of the law is bliss.

You might say that it may be too much of a straight analogy, but it isn't actually. I didn't remove it myself. I didn't give you any demerit. I didn't tell everyone that you had an animated sig at may isa na namang pasaway sa forums. I discreetly told you, through a personal message, to, and I quote myself:

Quote
please remove animated GIF on sig. thanks.

You replied, and I quote:

Quote
why, what's up?  no reason stated in your message.

This is where the trouble started:
I misunderstood what you said. What I thought you said was I sent you a blank message. That's why I replied again, which it seems I had implied a more stern tone. For this I apologize.

But what I don't get is, after the first message, why didn't you try to search the basis for my message? It took me a second message for you to search for this thread. Which brings me to my earlier point. It is not my primary obligation to inform and explain every rule there is in this forum. My job is to make sure that order is maintained by making sure members follow the rules. There was a message given, and I thought that being a moderator, my message was to be treated as having a basis on the rules, not just my own opinion.

Having said my peace, I want to propose this as a learning experience for all, especially for myself.

RascalKing, I apologize for the misunderstanding, but please realize that I have seen so many of the animated sigs that I get tired of it at some time. Tao lang kasi pasensya na.

P.S.
Just for the record. It was animated before you changed it.

I replaced it with a non-animated version right after your first message, even though I did not have your reason.  (I like the image and what it reminds me of).

Since I had already complied, I saw no reason to research further, especially since I had already asked for your reason.  I was expecting that you would reply to my message with an answer.

Thank you for your thorough explanation.  I am more satisfied now that I know your thought process, and I apologize as well for adding to the misunderstanding.

Sorry  - I posted my comments habang mainit pa ulo ko.
