We're just using some natural kalamansi-mangosteen syrup here and haven't had a chance to refill yet, but I know the True Value @ Vertis North has an exchange service.  We're going to try some fruity Torani syrups soon.

Went out and bought a few more MyBook drives after confirming that these are in fact White Label Ultrastar aka "Helium" drives (DataCenter) rather than White Label RED drives (Prosumer) which was my initial assessment (see below pics and links). The only difference I see is that these MyBook Ultrastar drives have been detuned to run slightly slower (ie 5400rpm vs 7200rpm) which translates to a difference of 25MB/s in terms of sustained transfer rates (ie 249 MB/s for HC510 vs 225 MB/s for Mybooks). Assuming these are of equal build quality, I can definitely live with theMybooks considering the price difference.

Out of curiosity I tested 4 drives using RAID0 config in FreeNAS and setup an SMB share and I easily hit 10Gbe using only 4 drives. I also tried transferring very large movie files (36GB) to see if the drives can sustain writes even if they run out of cache (256MB each) and I can confirm it was able to sustain 1GB/s transfer rates. I'm excited to see how 8 drives will perform using RAIDZ2 (2 parity).

I'll be using these to replace the 8 x 2TB purple drives in my FreeNAS DR server.

My Books sbould be quite easy to shuck without damaging the enclosure using the thinnest guitar picks you can find. As always, shuck at the risk of "possibly" losing warranty. I say possibly because some users (mostly American) have claimed to getting replacements even by just sending through bare drives (shucked) and getting a replacement. I suppose they have better laws that protect consumer rights to self repair. I dont know the experience here in PH.

UPDATE #2

REFERENCE  https://www.eteknix.com/wd-red-10tb-3-5-inch-soho-nas-hard-disk-review/

Stupid me for assuming all WD Red drives are the same across the entire lineup. Apparently I was wrong... again.. lol. It seems that Western Digital have chosen to adopt HGST's heliotech (8TB and UP) rather than use their own technology which also means these 10TB Red drives are also descendants... or rather derivatives of the Ultrastar HC510s in that they are also detuned to run at 5400rpm.

But that's not the point of this update.

If I use the numbers posted on the link above, I am able to get a rough estimate of how my own NAS setup will perform. My setup will be using 8 disks in RAIDZ2 using 10Gbe. So what does this mean?

- Each 10TB drive is actually 9.1TB capacity. In RAIDZ2, I lose 2 drives to parity which means I get 54.6TB (6 disks x 9.1TB) in Total Capacity. Still good.

- Since disks will run slower over time as spindles get closer the end of the platter, the absolute worst transfer rates I'd expect on RAIDZ2 is 558MB/sec (6 disks x 93MB/s). Adjusted for RAID overhead I'd still get around 400-450MB/sec of sustained transfer rates as these are enterprise drives afterall. That's Samsung EVO 1TB SATA SSD performance only over the network.. Regular consumer grade SSDs start losing steam the moment they run out of cache. See Samsung EVO vs QVO comparison video and fast forward to 12:17 mark https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WACyyFF_ci0

- However, since FreeNAS already starts complaining at 80% capacity, then realistically speaking, I would have started upgrading my disks at around 75% fill rate. At this point, my expected transfer rates should still be a whopping 840MB/sec (thats 6 disks x 140MB/s). Adjusted for RAID overhead, that should 700-750MB/sec sustained transfer rates. That's just a little under 10Gbe performance.

So if you want to have your cake and eat it too, use Enterprise drives where possible. But then again, I'm bad at math and these may all be wrong. lol.

A WD MyBook 10TB is a WD Red 10TB is also a WD Ultrastar HC510

93MB/sec at 100% fill rate

140MB/sec at 75% fill rate

lol ikaw pala umubos ng stocks of the 10TB!
Did you have to mask pin 3 on the SATA power connector or they worked right after shucking?

Hahaha. I wont mention the store names anymore but when I was buying the last 4 drives in Greenhills today (having failed to find them in Gilmore early today.. the lines are horrendous btw), an old lady behind me happened to also be looking for 10TB external drive for her son. The saleslady just told her off saying she sold all of them to the guy in front and the old lady looked at me with disdain as if I ruined her son's happiness. Lol.

The MyBook drives worked out of the box when I plugged them in but that's because my backplane uses Molex power.  If you are just using regular ATX PSU, dont use SATA power directly, just get those 4 pin Molex to SATA connectors from Shopee or Lazada and that should solve the 3rd pin SATA power issue.
