Poor XP...
I don't play games much but the games I have work flawlessly in XP.
Including NFS: Porsche Unleashed (I have it running in compatibility mode Win9x).
The rest are all new first person shooters -no problems.

I'm using win2000 and I encountered errors when I tried to install Max Payne and Renegade.  I just updated the drivers (DirectX, display, sound).  Most of the time, you just need to update ur drivers for the games to work on xp/2000.

Cheers.

Hahaha, I use to remember that DOS was touted as the OS of  PC games and Windows 95 did not cut it at all as a gaming platform.  Now, the newer of version of Windows 95 is purported to be the best gaming OS.  How ironic indeed!
