Palomino multiplier locked?
« on: May 14, 2003, 10:43:13 PM »
I upgraded my computer, but unfortuntely i bought a Palomino core AthlonXP 2100, is the multiplier in this CPU locked?  I'm using a jetway motherboard, v400DB and I can't overclock it.  But what I see in the motherboardboard's multiplier jumpers is up to 12.5X, so can I still overclock it?  There is FSB jumper setting for 100, 133 and 166MHz.

Is it risky to unlock the multiplier in the CPU?

My motherboard's multiplier are not set at bios but through the motherboard's jumpers and has multiplier settings upto 12.5X only, it has no way to set the voltage, only the FSB.  The Athlon XP 2100 has 5 L1 bridges to connect, meaning 5 bits, (5x to 18.5x multiplier range)  while my mobo has only 4 jumpers (4 bits) on the motherboard that's why its limited to (5x to 12.5X).

Therfore, I cannot overclock at 133 but only at 166 is this true?

Will the mobo recognize the fifth bit in the unlocked Palomino?

Not sure if it is worthwhile unlocking a XP2100 Palomino... you really wont be able to get much mileage from it since the XP2100 is where the Palomino architecture tops out.

you can still overclock your processory by means of FSB.. slowly increase your FSB in small increments until it starts to hang then ease off a little.. AFAIK, that jetway mobo has FSB increments of 1mhz.. so you have from 134Mhz to 165Mhz to play with.. :)

Thank you chaos for your advise, I guess I just have to accept that I can't overclock the CPU, but I can overclock the FSB by upgrading my DDR266 to DDR400.  My computer won't boot if the DDR266 is run at 200mhz.
