Title: Digital Projectors
Post by: wheelee on April 11, 2017, 10:12:51 AM
the age has come to talk about digital projectors, their becoming affordable & better. when someone mentions projectors we go meh, those white washed pictures that you see in the office meetings no way! lol, but with the advent of digital/ LED/ DLP projectors the game has changed - bye bye TV (sometime later)

my real plan was to get a Xiaomi 49" LED TV, the pictures & movies where stunning, in the catalog but when i went to the Xiaomi shop here in dongguan where the place was well lit, i got a little disappointed then that same day my friend got an Xgimi Z4 Aurora & I was blown away by it's performance. Small, light carry anywhere 300" TV lol

So I got the Xgimi Cc, portable, 8 hours battery life, JBL speakers & and a few decent specs, I almost got the H1 but it isn't for mobility but is the top of the line from Xgimi also TI's 4K DLP will soon become mainstream so I guess I'll just wait for that one.

initial test, pardon the mess as I was very excited to set it up lol
pics/ movies seem to be fine even in a lightly deemed room - your eyes will adjust for sometime
sound is also ok but kinda weak in some movies even at full volume, will do more testing. BTW this is chinese version & the international version they say is about $100 more because of some UL/CE blah blah markings & regulatory requirements.

look ma, no plugs

lights on

lights of in room, bathroom light on (left side) 160~180" i guess

all lights off
(https://s30.postimg.org/mghzkzujl/xgimilightoff2.png)

movie night became longer, pictures are much better than the one taken here by a phone cam

The H1 (4k capable) is SGD1400, the Z4 is SGD600. I found a chinese tutorial to install kodi on the Z4.

Huh the H1 isn't 4k capable pala. it's 4k compatible but downscales video to 1080p.

Expected as much. 4k PJs are still super expensive. If the H1 really was 4k for $1000 the entire AV industry would've been all over it.

AFAIK as of 2017 only Sony has 'true 4k' offerings in the consumer space, and the cheapest is priced $10k. Competing stuff from Epson and JVC use some form of pixel-shifting to simulate 4k.

Nice! how long is the life of the bulb? er the LEDs? negligible na ba with the current projectors?

According to the Xgimi page on the H1 it's 30,000 hours.

if you watch an average 8 hours per day, bulb cold last for 8~10 years.

since most of the xgimi's are in chinese & the International version cost $$$ more & no firmware hacking in sight (except for the z4 air) the solution I used is by sticking in an Android PC via HDMI! Voila! all your apps in English Android with no limitations, oh mine has since the stick I used is 2 years old, 4.1.1 OS but still I'm happy I found this solution.

Android PC plugged in via HDMI, too bad my stick is 2 years old lol

here's a nonsense test done on a $5 tarp with different shades
Luckily the other side was a non-reflective surface which can be used in lieu of a white flat surface.

I really have no idea about this test but it seems that the yellow/ bright shade will be more view-able with the lights on although the dark shade area have more contrast, size about 75 inch

ordered from a tarp shop with different shades made in MS Paint

Lights OFF

Luckily the back is non reflective but they say reflective is much better

Lights ON
(http://www.avsforum.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=2117913&d=1493949344)

Light OFF, pictures are much better than the one taken from a cam phone

^ A good screen can make a huge difference in picture quality. I use a low gain screen at home, makes black levels and shadow detail much better even on my rather dated projector. When the lamp dies i'll probably get something like your XGIMI.

Test image shot in darkened room using Galaxy S4. Camera is terrible at low light shots, the gamma bars are actually discernible all the way through.

For your PJ i think low gain is also the way to go. Your max brightness is high enough that it won't be a problem getting good white levels even on a gray screen, and it'll make contrast and black levels better.

for the mean time I usually just use the wall that's painted like milky white & I place a pure white paper in between & you can really see the difference. What are those grain thing like 0.8 or 1.0?

anyways I had a chance to try this little thing outdoor last night since I came back to the factory late & not a lot people around
just wondered how it would look like on a huge wall though not totally dark coz of the street lamps, The Cc would be a little brighter if plugged in.
i guess the Cc was more than 10 meters away from the wall, not sure how big the screen is though.

^ Not 'grain', but gain, which tells you about the screen's brightness

1.0 will be a white wall
below 1 will be grey
above 1.0 will be a different material that's more reflective

Low gain screens can give you better black levels.

There are also ambient light rejecting screens where the material is designed to absorb or diffuse light coming in at an angle (ambient), while reflecting direct light (coming from projector). These can make for a good picture even if the room isn't dimmed.

Like so: (undarkened room, regular projector screen top half, ambient-light rejecting screen bottom).

so the ALR screens really work ha, I just got me a tarp & yesterday I got a white satin sheet & luckily the other side is not reflective, will give it a shot after I iron it out

meanwhile my wall will suffice  B)

just got those reflective cloth, first was the thick light gray one which is used for EWD on clothing which was delivered folded & the other was a little dark gray thinner material which was delivered rolled. The first was much heavier & thicker than the 2nd cloth. Yes the viewing angle is really small as can seen from the sample shots, some shots where taken at an angle around 30deg (estimate) while other shots where taken Head on. It seems the thick reflective cloth is more brighter than the other but not very much. got both in taobao here in china. oh how I wish I could put a Frame on these!

it's as easy as turning it on then pointing it on a white wall - kung mga madalian na setup lang
pero kung dedicated AV-Room yan ibang usapan na yan ;)

another ALR screen test - viewing angle is  very narrow but view-able during the day or in ambient lighting but i guess this screen is good for those cheap projectors with low brightness.

windows open around noon

night time, lights on

daytime, off center a bit

off center, wall is even better at this angle

different side, seems light eh reflection of the cloth is different from this side

my son gave me an Xgimi Z6 for my bday & the wow factor on this is awesome! HDR10, Motion compensation (motion blur?) 2D to 3D - it really works & the Z6 is really small compared to other 1080P PJ's

Z6 & CC
