Something serious naman:  PH wasting thousands of tons of rice per year

http://ph.news.yahoo.com/ph-wasting-thousands-of-tons-of-rice-per-year.html

Quote
"When not wasted, (the rice) could result in import savings as high as P10 billion and could feed 4.3 million hungry Filipinos in a year," PhilRice said on its website.

Imagine what we could do/build with P10 billion a year.

That's very odd for an explosion of that size to have the primary vessel containing the fuel to still be intact.

How did the tanker crash in the first place?

I can't verify the authenticity of this story but... apparently, tanker didn't crash... it wasn't a traffic accident. If I got my facts straight, the tanker was transferring the highly flammable gas to the building's storage tanks when a leak occurred... the leak unfortunately went unnoticed for quite sometime. So the build up of the flammable gas was enough to level the building when a possible spark triggered the explosion.

The driver of the tanker was held for questioning since he was the one responsible for ensuring a leak-free connection between the storage tanks, hoses, etc.

this is the tanker that they said cause the accident

meron ding bali-balita dito na hinahabol daw ng driver yong traffic lights paturn left, then na out of control, bumangga sa poste ng flyover yong pwetan saka daw po sumabog...
Title: Re: The FAIL Thread

That actually makes the leaky transfer scenario more believable. If the leak was on the end of the line plugged into the building, then the gas would accumulate there. Obviously a leak from the end plugged into the tanker would just vent straight to atmosphere.

Couple sue police for armed raid over TV remote

A British couple are suing police after armed officers stormed their home mistaking a television remote for a handgun.

Michelle Malone, 46, and Keith Abrahams, 44, were home one evening when ten armed and armoured officers, eight plain-clothed policemen and a dog handler ambushed their apartment.

According to the UK's The Telegraph, the couple were forced into the back of a van at gunpoint then locked in a police cell and interrogated by detectives for four hours before being released without charge.

"I just remember running out of bed after hearing a bang like and earthquake and seeing police pointing guns at Keith, who was up against the wall," Malone told The Telegraph.

Police were reportedly called to the couple's home by a paramedic who had earlier visited the premises to treat Ms Malone for a panic attack.

The paramedic allegedly reported seeing a man holding a firearm in the bedroom of the home.

"The police told us the medic had seen a 10 inch long black firearm being held by Keith as he lay in bed," Malone said.

"But he had dozed off watching TV in his bedroom - it must have been the remote."

Officers reportedly conducted a forensic fingertip search of the property but found no evidence of a gun.

Malone is now suing West Mercia Police.

She claims to have suffered a concussion as well as bruising and emotional distress as a result of the police's rough handling of her.

"I already suffer from anxiety and then to suffer the indignity of being arrested for absolutely nothing has just alleviated this.

Abrahams said he was terrified and confused by the incident.

"I was shocked to death.

"I've never had a gun in my life - I've never even seen one before," he told The Telegraph.

A police spokesperson defended the officers' actions and acknowledged they were addressing the couple's claims they were mistreated during the incident.

"As is standard procedure with firearms reports, the incident was fully risk assessed and armed police were sent to the property in order to minimise any threat or harm to both the public and the officers attending the scene," she said.

"On arrival, the property was fully searched and although the original call to police was made in good faith, no firearms were found at the address.

"We have already spoken to Ms Malone about her complaint and are currently investigating her concerns over her treatment on the night of the incident."

The couple are also seeking an apology from West Midland Ambulance Service (WMAS) for whom the paramedic worked.

WMAS have reportedly since launched an internal investigation into the paramedic involved.

Unluckiest bowler?

The 300 game in bowling is the pinnacle of perfection, 12 straight strikes delivered without a slip. Few people ever get to the point where they're preparing for their 12th and final roll with a chance at immortality.

Troy Walker was one such person. And the way he was denied his 300 has to go down as one of the more agonizing moments in bowling history.

Walker was playing in the Luci Bonneau Doubles, a charity event held this past weekend in Houston. As you can see in the video above, the rack dropped before the ball could hit the pins! That's like a squirrel stealing your ball on the 18th green at Augusta. So unfair. So absolutely unfair. When Walker got the chance to roll again, he only knocked down seven pins, closing with a 297. Worst of all? Walker acknowledged that he might have caused the mistake himself by asking for a re-rack of the lane next to him.
The odds of a perfect 300 game depend on the skill of the bowler slinging the ball. Perfect games happen relatively frequently in professional bowling events; five players have bowled eight perfect games in a season, according to the Professional Bowlers' Association. For perspective: a bowler who averages seven strikes per game, which would be a professional record, has about a 1 percent chance of ever rolling a perfect game. So, yeah, it's not happening for you ... and, sadly, it may not happen for Troy Walker ever again.

I thought that anyone below 23 is naturally an idealist, just as about 30 is when you start to become a capitalist and look after yourself and brood first. Then at 40+ some invariably turn into cynics.

Actually, maraming ganyan involving power lines and electric posts.  I've seen a road widening project where the Meralco post was left sitting in the middle.  Sa MRT Taft station within arm's reach ang electric cables from the stairs with no warning signs or safety nets.

It's like they don't coordinate at all with the electric, phone, and cable TV companies who use those posts and get them to re-route it.  O sana man lang i-consider nila sa placement at design ng footbridge.

A spacey German man who had just married the woman of his dreams promptly got a reason to apologize for the rest of his marriage when he left his new bride at a gas station and drove off. For two hours. Yes, two hours.

He managed to get 125 miles away before he stopped to ask himself where his wife was, according to the AFP (http://news.yahoo.com/german-man-forgets-bride-road-stop-honeymoon-170800345.html).

alcohol is water soluble... jet fuel isn't.

Dude, if you're going to argue logic at least make sure your statement is correct.
The point stands.

My statement: "Firefighters accidentally spray jet fuel on fire."
Your statement: "they didn't spray jet fuel... the water they used was contaminated with jet fuel."

Now, was there jet fuel in the mixture that they sprayed?
Yes.
Therefore they sprayed jet fuel onto a fire.

The lack of solubility makes it even better because there would have been pure, unmixed jet fuel in that fluid suspension they sprayed.

One particularly funny incident involved an Ateneo kid who tended to get into a lot of fights because he was big, sucked at counterstrike (or DOTA), and was a sore loser about it. So this one day he picked a fight with a short, scruffy looking guy after getting his ass handed to him in-game. Of course he doesn't know the person he just aggro'd is actually pretty good at fighting, so he gets his ass handed to him again at the parking lot, by a guy who's at least a head shorter than he is. Now for the coup-de-grace: Ateneo kid has a patron cop in teh QCPD, so he calls his ninong over to "settle things". You could literally hear his jaw drop when his cop arrives, and immediately salutes his vanquisher. Another thing he didn't know was that he picked a fight with the son of one of the top ranking generals (not sure if his dad was chief of police at the time). So yeah, 3 fails in a row, from a dude who thought he had the advantage in all of the three pwnings he just inflicted on himself.

I've never heard a police man conceding to a name drop with just a business card and something written behind it.

it actually works.  it depends on the person kung nagiingat o hindi.  actually, those business cards would also be useful so that cops wont take advantage of you if ever you get caught at night or if they are planning to do something illegal.  its up to you if you would use it for the wrong reasons.

Sad that we have to resort to these sort of things, though.

For me, I've never tried to pay my way out of a ticket. I've asked a friend once for help in getting my license back, though, because of the enforcer not seeing that the light was still green when I crossed the intersection. Hard for them to see when tehy are right below the light.

low-ranking traffic cops/enforcers do... for fear of losing their jobs or getting demoted to some stagnating position.

just like that model, some peeps talaga tend to abuse just to show how well connected they are....I know this guy (this was told to me by his son) who usually uses his "connection" just to evade simple traffic violations such as no parking and beating the red light, and he even bragged , to the point that he humiliates the traffic or sometime police officer, just to show "na mataas ang connection nya" . One day, along espana (near UST), this traffic enforcer flagged him for no loading /unloading violation, first he apologize to the officer while getting his license together with a "card" from one of the DOTC officer (whom he knew personally since they are neighbors that time, also, they have the same surname but they are not related). The officer asked him if he is related to the officer, and he lied by saying yes... the officer still issued a ticket, then he asked if the officer knew his "tito", the officer just nod his head, then he said "eh gusto mo pa bang umabot to sa kanya? " the officer then said "cge paabutin mo"..they have a short exchange of words, then he said " babalik mo din sa akin lisensya ko, at sa kankungan ka na ma aasign"...

turns out that the traffic officer personally knew the DOTC officer..aside from they where former neighbors, his uncle (traffic officer) was a senior officer of a fraternity, where the DOTC officer was one of his "juniors",  also, the DOTC officer is the only child, and his nephews from his cousins are still students (high-school and some college)..

His license got "lost", (he found his license at LTO LasPinas after almost 2 months, remember, he was caught in manila)..the DOTC officer denied that he knew the person..LTO issued a mandatory seminar that he needs to attend..

Now, aside from they are no longer neighbors (they moved from QC to Pasig) he no longer flashes the "cards" on his wallet..though I know that they still have connection (son showed me some pics of them, together with officers in uniform and other government officials)..

How about people to avoid knowingly violating the law?

You are who you are, not who you know.  However we yearn for equality and transparency, we are often too inclined to avoid responsibility by association.

Report: Binay camp seriously thinks Mitsubishi Delica is a luxury vehicle

http://www.topgear.com.ph/features/feature-articles/report-binay-camp-seriously-thinks-mitsubishi-delica-is-a-luxury-vehicle (http://www.topgear.com.ph/features/feature-articles/report-binay-camp-seriously-thinks-mitsubishi-delica-is-a-luxury-vehicle)

Sen. Trillianes reply:

SENATOR ANTONIO “SONNY” F. TRILLANES IV RE: UNA’S SPURIOUS STORY

This is in response to the Press Release of the United Nacionalist Alliance (UNA) Media Relations regarding the eight (8) luxury vehicles that I purportedly owned when I was in the military, which were said to be undeclared in my SALN. This is a baseless and desperate move by VP Binay’s camp in order to divert attention from the corruption cases against him currently being investigated by the Senate Blue Ribbon Sub-Committee of which I am a member.

It is apparent that VP Binay’s camp is trying to revive an old issue, which has been already dismissed by the Office of the Ombudsman and the Makati Court. This matter was raised at the height of GMA administration, when the CIDG filed cases against us, including this issue, due to Magdalo’s corruption exposés against the said administration. The cases regarding the alleged vehicles were dismissed because the documents the CIDG submitted in support of its allegation were found to be spurious.

However, if only to set an example for VP Binay on how to respond to issues instead of evading them, allow me to state for the record the true facts regarding these recycled allegations:

1. The allegation of UNA that I owned eight (8) luxury vehicles enumerated in their press release is a blatant lie. In truth, what I owned was a second-hand 1996 Nissan Terrano, which could not considered a luxury vehicle. I sold said vehicle in 2007 to help finance my senatorial campaign.

2. I have never ever owned a Kawasaki motorbike. In fact, I have never driven and I do not know how to ride a motorbike, not even once in my life. My license restriction can easily prove this fact.

3. As for the Pajero with license plate RIZ-222, the true owner thereof, a certain Darlito Roca, operations officer of Lydia's Lechon, has surfaced to claim and acknowledge his ownership thereof. An article published by the Philippine Star in August 2003, detailed the explanation of the said owner on this issue. (See: Lechon vendor owns SUV linked to mutineer by Jaime Laude, August 14, 2003)

4. With regard to the five (5) Delicas, the actual and beneficial owner thereof is my mother, a businesswoman who bought the same from the proceeds of a P2-million loan she obtained from a bank sometime in October 2000. Delicas were second-hand vans bought in Subic and are not luxury vehicles. In fact, they can be bought in lots for as low as P100,000 to P150,000 each. The intention was to operate a van rental service using these vehicles. These old vehicles, however, proved too costly to maintain. Hence, my mother opted to sell and dispose some of them.

The very idea that I would buy five (5) vehicles of the same model and make for my personal use is quite absurd and illogical. My mother's van rental business was duly registered with the Department of Trade and Industry under her name and was properly stamped and licensed by the Caloocan City Hall.

This flimsy and dubious story shows the depths at which VP Binay’s camp is willing to go just to mislead the public and divert their attention from the issues at hand.

I trust that the people can discern properly which stories are real and fictitious.

Driver was very lucky. The driver's seat was literally the only survivable part of the car left but she seems to have gotten away with relatively (considering the magnitude of the accident) minor injuries.

Against all odds, the woman was injured, but alive. She broke her top two vertebrae and shattered her hand, while she was also in a coma, but is now "recovering exceptionally well", according to an interview that she gave to Belgian news station HLN this past Sunday.

Honda CRV's "4wd" system doesn't work at all!

Article (with Honda's reply): http://teknikensvarld.se/honda-cr-v-4wd-system-is-not-working-again-163708/ (http://teknikensvarld.se/honda-cr-v-4wd-system-is-not-working-again-163708/)

Quote
The automotive myth-busters and "moose test" inventing Swedes at Teknikens Värld set up a little climb for the 2015 Honda CR-V to see how it'd move out with no traction on the drive wheels. It failed miserably.

TV's evaluators say they tested last year's CR-V in the same way; putting the vehicle on a slight incline with the front wheels on rollers. When they tried to drive forward, the AWD system would supposedly redirect power from slipping wheels to ones with traction (rear, in this case) and let the car proceed.

When it didn't work on the 2014 model, they say Honda promised a "reprogram" that rectified the problem. As we can see in this demonstration, said reprogram appears to have been unsuccessful– it doesn't look like the "SUV" is putting any power at all to the rear wheels.

Title: Re: The FAIL Thread
Post by: splerdu on October 25, 2014, 10:33:39 AM
^ Honda reply is a typical PR non-answer. "Your tests aren't real world", followed by a "we have x million customers" brag, with the implied "they can't all be wrong."

Also, "these guys" were the original inventors of the moose test, which has since become an industry standard. I don't see how this can be an attention grab. They didn't even publish outside Sweden, but the press got hold of the story and it went viral from there.

So Honda says the test is not "real" because both front tires lose grip at the same time, which their computer does not expect. How about a test where only one side loses grip?

And compare to another vehicle, this time from Brand S

We should actually conduct real world tests with cars here.  I feel that the usual publications are so advertising centric that lousy cars get really weird ratings making them "acceptable".
Title: Re: The FAIL Thread
Post by: popoy on October 25, 2014, 03:13:00 PM
what was key in honda's response was friction and torque.  It seems torque is a trigger for the system to engage or disengage and torque on rollers is the not same as the outdoors. What the test proved was the CRV was not calibrated to elicit a reaction on rollers, just that. I don't drive on rollers so why should that be important.

On the two vids above. Both lost grip. However the subaru was able to sustain forward motion while the CRV did not. This I attribute to the subaru being a far superior vehicle overall than the CRV.
Title: Re: The FAIL Thread
Post by: splerdu on October 25, 2014, 07:17:55 PM
^ Possibly because the rollers simulate a scenario where there is absolute loss of traction. Like hydroplaning, or black ice.

I'm just getting on their case here because this seems like a simple software fix. Also if the AWD option proves to be not very helpful as shown in those two cases, then it makes more sense to just save the money and go for 2wd instead. Locally it's surely what I'd go for.

Here's another group comparison. You can really see the CRV's 4wd is engaged a lot less than its competitors, and it actually fails at the lowest point on the ramp compared to any other CUV.

This. I haven't seen a local mag write a bad review about any car, ever. I suppose that's because cars work pretty well when new, but they really should have some long-term testers to be able to give advice on what the actual ownership experience is like.

but is there any point in having 4wd and not have any use for it?  couldnt you just buy the 2wd instead to save on the purchase price and even fuel costs?

Russia's T-14 Armata tank breaks down before its parade debut

http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/world/russias-t14-armata-tank-breaks-down-before-its-parade-debut-20150508-ggwt18.html (http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/world/russias-t14-armata-tank-breaks-down-before-its-parade-debut-20150508-ggwt18.html)

A new high-tech battle tank hailed by Russia as a "masterpiece" appeared to break down on Red Square on Thursday during a rehearsal for the military parade at which it will make its long-awaited debut.

The tank's driver raised a small red flag to show he had problems but managed to drive on about 30 minutes later after an attempt to tow it away was abandoned, a Reuters witness said.

The parade announcer later said the stoppage had been planned to demonstrate how military equipment could be evacuated from the battlefield, prompting laughter from the rehearsal audience.

aruy. ubos ang media files.

Quote
When I signed up for Apple Music, iTunes evaluated my massive collection of Mp3s and WAV files, scanned Apple’s database for what it considered matches, then removed the original files from my internal hard drive. REMOVED them. Deleted. If Apple Music saw a file it didn’t recognize—which came up often, since I’m a freelance composer and have many music files that I created myself—it would then download it to Apple’s database, delete it from my hard drive, and serve it back to me when I wanted to listen, just like it would with my other music files it had deleted.

Tried making a user.js that replaces imgur .gifs with .gifvs to save bandwidth.

Messed up by using 'complete' in the DOM ready function so the script ended up waiting for .gifs to fully load, before replacing them with .gifvs wasting even more bandwidth. LOL!
