Title: DSL / broadband upload speed - post your speeds...
Post by: dta on December 05, 2011, 12:03:21 PM
Have been using PLDT DSL for quite a long time now. Usually only the download speed matters, since I rarely upload (or only upload a little at a time, eg. a few pics in FB).

But lately, I took some videos in an org event (720x480 MPG). I'm trying to upload it in clips (maybe 1-2 minute clip, each weighs in at around 80Mb-200Mb = around 20-25 minutes to nearly 1 hour to upload a clip; total maybe 1Gb or so...). It's taking a really long time to upload the videos (and the bad thing is I can't seem to queue them up -- so I have to wait for one upload to finish before the next upload. If I don't watch the screen, I don't know that it has finished upload so I can upload the next clip).

I notice the upload rate is around 75-77kb/sec, which is around 620kbps -- I've tested my PLDT DSL using SpeedTest and it matches (600-650kbps usually).

(Although my first upload was only around 60kb/sec -- resetting the DSL modem made the upload faster again at 75-77kb/sec.  This is assuming I don't do any other browsing/Internet activity at the same time).

I'm just wondering, are there other Internet broadband connections that have a fairly consistent fast upload speed (say maybe 150-200kb/sec which would be 2-3 times the speed).  Or perhaps go to a free wifi (eg. Starbucks or SM Free Wifi) -- any idea if the upload speeds of these free wifi-zones could be faster than my PLDT DSL?

Can someone post their upload speeds using the USB sticks (eg. Globe Tattoo or Superstick or Sun/Smart USB prepaid broadband?)  Are the upload speeds consistent?

(I would say that PLDT DSL's speeds are fairly consistent, which is a plus, although as mentioned, the upload speed is on the slow side...)

~~~~~
I also did another test, so while uploading the video, I tried downloading some other files from other website. So there's an upload going on and download going on.  I notice that when this is the case, the upload speed drops to around 66-67kb/s (from 75-77kb/s when only upload is going on and no other Internet activity)
OMG 720X480 in MPEG-2?  Convert them first before uploading!
I see.. so that implies most people don't use MPEG2 to upload..  (the video cam records in MPEG2, so I didn't need to use CPU time to reprocess, I did cut out non-essential parts, but hadn't re-encoded yet, since I don't know how much space/bandwidth that would save, plus I'm not sure if quality would be affected)
Then what format would you suggest to convert it to, if I want to retain 720x480 quality (and hopefully smaller upload size)?
As mentioned, as of now, 1-minute MPEG2 weighs in at around 75Mb - almost 20 minutes to upload a 1-minute clip. Do sites like YouTube or Facebook accept the format suggested (and hopefully retain 720x480 good quality).
Your upload speed is actually excellent. To get more than that, you'd likely need to be on an expensive corporate account. Most home DSLs will top out at about 256kbps, broadband sticks will get you less than 100kbps upload.
If time is important then recompress to something smaller before uploading. DivX or Xvid Mpeg4 is pretty common, or H264 using a tool like Handbrake. Definitely re-encode if you expect people to download your videos directly (megaupload, bitlocker or whatever).
I don't know anything about Facebook, but Youtube will re-encode your video to come out with their 240p/360p/480p options, so if you're concerned about maintining maximum quality, upload as is and just bear with the wait time.
Nice.  Was thinking of getting their 150Mbps package but biglang nagkaroon ng employee Fiber plan ang Starhub. Kamusta ang VPN service ng VQ?
Title: Re: DSL / broadband upload speed - post your speeds...
Post by: Klay on July 23, 2013, 04:36:52 PM
If you still have a chance to switch, go for it! Balita ko sa HWZ forums nag-tthrottle pa din ang Starhub sa connections nila. VQ's support is also very good.
As for the VPN, it's alright. It's more of a DNS play than a total VPN package kase SG lagi IP mo, they said they worked this out through some special routing. Still no offensive sites that are explicitly blocked by the MDA.
You will be able to access most media sites that need require you to have local IPs, if its not listed just call them and they'll evaluate. Check the dropdowns on the side http://www.viewqwest.com/freedomvpn/
LTE in Marikina ftw lol
(http://speedtest.net/android/517512136.png)
This was with ONE bar of signal, and the phone switching between 3G and LTE. Basically a place at the very edge of LTE coverage. I guess there are advantages to having nearly the entire spectrum to yourself.
My previous ~18Mbps result from Makati was with the signal bars maxed out, and run early in the morning. A typical mid-day test would average between 5-9Mbps.
those are corporate leased lines...
ten years ago, PLDT can already provide up to 10gbps for a price of course...
the cheapest corporate leased line cost 10K/month for synchronous 2 mbps
I also know back then that there's a dynamic plan with a maximum speed of 115gbps using FO for a minimum of $500/month
How PLDT Deliberately Keeps Local Internet Traffic Slow and More Expensive In Philippines
http://www.reddit.com/r/Philippines/comments/2aurzq/how_pldt_deliberately_keeps_local_internet (http://www.reddit.com/r/Philippines/comments/2aurzq/how_pldt_deliberately_keeps_local_internet)
TL:DR: The main problem why local traffic-exchange in Philippines is on a glacial speed when you connect to one of Garena’s rooms is because, PLDT DSL doesn’t let its customers share traffic with its peers like Globe, Sky or Bayan DSL. The company intentionally keeps the exchange through its own network.
The main reason why Filipinos are paying more for slower internet connection compared to other countries is because PLDT acts as the country’s own backbone, able to control all the flow of internet traffic from Philippines to the outside. ISPs are also required to pay PLDT for using its ‘fake’ backbone instead of relying to real backbone service providers like PACNET to properly handle the data exchange for this country.
Unfortunately, there's a slim chance for PLDT to fix this because: 1) If the company connects to Philippine's IX, Globe will have the upper hand on giving better service to its customers 2) If PLDT starts paying for a real backbone service, it will lose a chunk of its profit since it's currently acting as the country's network backbone enjoying unprecedented power on dictating how traffic exchange should be structured in Philippines, setting the price for internet bandwith, plus, the annual cut it receives from ISPs paying for its 'one-of-a-kind' network.
