So i need a new monitor
« on: November 05, 2011, 10:29:44 PM »
and Im torn between these two

http://www.pcx.com.ph/index.php/peripherals/monitor/24-viewsonic-vx2450-1920x1080.html

24 Viewsonic VX2450

and this

http://www.pcx.com.ph/index.php/peripherals/monitor/23-lg-ips236v-led-hdmi-1920x1080.html

23 LG IPS236V

The viewsonic gives a nice 24", whilst the LG gives me an IPS screen.
Ive looked around and both seem to be great monitors, the question is what in your opinion would be nicer? If any of you guys have had experience with either of them, can i get your opinion?
Will be used mostly for gaming, but surfing and some watching will be done on this as well.

Thanks muchos!

i haven't tried either, but i've been in exactly the same dilemma about a year ago.  The case with me was a Samsung 24" (forgot the exact model) and the AOC IF23.   I chose the AOC.  I liked it so much that i bought another after a few weeks.

marginal ang difference ng 23" at 24".  If you're going to use it for watching vids,  go for the ips panel.

I haven't seen the LG IPS LCD in actual yet, but IPS panels are known to be much better image quality (big difference compared to TN panels).

As for the Viewsonic VX2450WM-LED, why not opt for the slightly newer VX2451MH-LED - it's about Php 200-300 more expensive than the VX2450WM-LED, but has a slightly thinner profile, has HDMI, DVI and D-Sub ports, integrated speakers (and audio-in and audio-out ports). Its power adapter looks like those of laptops.

VX2451MH-LED ports

VX2451MH-LED vs VX1932WM-LED (note how thin is the VX2451MH-LED)

accessories included with VX2451MH-LED (note that power adapter, which looks like power adapters of external drives or some notebooks)

Because thats what I can find easily. Any place here that sells the newer one? Also, do they have the same image quality. TBH  the whole thinness profile doesnt matter to me since my monitor sits between me and my window/wall, so really, the only thing that really matters is the look up front and, of course, the image quality. Something that ive been hearing good about IPS panels.

On another note, anyone experience any of those new 120hz monitors? I saw only one being sold and at a rediculous price, 22k+
Ive heard the display is really smooth, though i have no idea on the actual picture quality.

^Coming from Samsung 931BW to LG IPS236v, I find the later to be better and easier to the eyes. You don't need a 120Hz monitor for smoothness unless you'll use it for 3D purposes (120Hz/2=60Hz. 60Hz will be alternated between each adjacent pixels for rendering). The normal monitor's 60Hz will suffice for gaming. As for videos, they don't have the IQ of real-time 3D rendered graphics so you won't really see the frames lagging as long as they are: 1) in between 24-30 fps; 2) enough distance from the viewer's eyes (the bigger the monitor and the nearer you are to it, the more visible the frame lag). Consider videos as continuing jpegs (lossy image),

saw the photo you uploaded, stickers pa lang alam nang IPS. LOL

anyway, i'm enjoying my LG IPS monitor as well, it took some time for me to adjust from my LG E2350V, I just can't pinpoint why (had a hard time focusing on text).  but this monitor so far had the least adjustments i made to calibrate (using both OSX10.6 and Win7 included monitor calibration).

as for 120Hz smoothness, based on my experience with 120Hz TV panels, well, I'm not a fan, it's good for simple movements, but for high action videos, it's starting to become irritating (lag and artifacts).  to get smoother images, just make sure your FPS is fast enough, 60fps and up. :)

If you can find one, get either the Dell U2311 or U2312. A bit pricier, but build quality is up there.

OT lang, while reading the thread title, my automatic response was "..then I took an arrow to the knee."
Too much Skyrim  :wacko:

Can you elaborate?

~~~~~
I've only tested a Dell LCD once, and I like the aspect ratio controls of Dell (not sure if most Dell LCDs have it).
With the Dell E248WFP LCD I tested before  (this is a 24-inch 1920x1200 LCD), its aspect ratio control settings allow "1:1", "4:3", "16:9", "Fill".  In "1:1" mode, if the resolution being displayed is less than the native resolution of the LCD, the image will be displayed "1:1" and centered on the display.
Most widescreen LCDs I've seen only allow a "4:3" and a full (widescreen) setting.  I have yet to see another LCD with the "1:1" setting (I know it's generally best to use native resolution, but there are instances when I'd like to check what the source really looks like when it's 1:1).
I've even seen some LCDs (it was an LG 17-inch LCD, the exact model I can't recall)  whose aspect ratio controls are quirky (eg. the LCD's native resolution is 1440x900, and you're viewing a 1024x768 old game that doesn't support widescreen, you could then set "4:3" so the graphics on the LCD look "right" and not stretched/flattened -- this is normal.  But then some LCDs allow you to set "4:3" even when you're already using it's full resolution, eg. you're displaying 1440x900 resolution on the LCD with 1440x900 native resolution -- yet the screen controls allow you to set "4:3" which results in a narrowed look - not normal.)   I suppose it's hard to explain well, but I wasn't able to take pics of these scenarios when I was testing some LCDs before...
Viewsonic's aspect ratio is more normal, but sometimes there are resolutions when it allows you to change aspect  ratio, but some resolutions where I think it should also have allowed the aspect ratio control, but it's grayed out... (eg. the LCD's control allows to set "4:3" aspect ratio when displaying 1024x768 or 1280x1024 on the Viewsonic LCD with native resolution 1440x900. But sometimes it doesn't allow the "4:3" mode on certain resolutions, eg. 1152x864 (this is a 4:3 resolution, but the Viewsonic LCD doesn't allow setting to "4:3" aspect ratio in this case...)
@bonta
what monitor did you get?
My LCD monitor died, gastos na naman.  What monitors are good at the 8k range?         I'm going to shy away from the LG IPS236v coz of bleeding and the too ominous price drop.
shit happens.
