safe freeware for saving youtube videos
« on: November 30, 2009, 02:41:22 PM »
Any safe freeware you guys can recommend for saying youtube video? Also, can it save it in the most common video format, so it doesn't require a proprietary player?

I was previously trying to find a software to save youtube videos... then I found out how to do it easily even without any 3rd party software.

I can't really remember if it's the same for XP but I'm currently using Vista and here's how I do it:
1.  After watching the youtube video, from the menu bar, click on Tools>Internet Options.
2.  Click on the button "Settings" of Browsing History.
3.  Click on "view files" button under Current Location.  A new explorer window showing files should appear.
4.  From the explorer window, click on "Organize" button then select "Folder and Search options".  A folder options window will appear.
5.  Select "view" tab and ensure that the follow is selected/deselected:
     a.  Show Hidden Files and Folder: SELECT
     b.  Hide protected operating system files: DESELECT
6.  Click on "apply" button.
7.  After doing these steps, you just have to look for the FLV file (for the youtube video you are watching) in the explorer window.  Copy or cut that file into another destination folder and rename the extension to AVI.
8.  Play the file using Windows Media Player....

That's it.  It works for me and I hope it works for you.

By the way, all this assumes you are also using Internet Explorer.

Hope this helps...

I used the updated tutorial here, which involved using Firefox, installing the GreaseMonkey addon and a custom script that inserts download links dun mismo sa YouTube page.

Di na kasi supported yung old "bookmarklet" trick, ni-revise ng YT yung site nila to prevent bookmarklets from D/Ling MP4 video, but the Firefox+Greasemonkey addon works flawlessly, for now :D

I have tried keepvid before and it works most of the time, but there are certain videos which it can't save, i would recommend the downloadhelper an add on for Firefox as suggested by hungree, its easy and has options for saving the video to different formats.

I havent tried those two.  I use file2hd.com which does the same thing I guess.  I'll try out those two in the near future.
