Torrent is Killing/Stopping My Internet
« on: December 26, 2021, 04:01:33 PM »
I am on a 175mbps plan. No problems downloading from torrents. Problem only started a few days ago. Whenever downloading torrents, the internet on my desktop stops working. No problem with other devices connected via wifi. Only the desktop PC losses internet. Only solution is to restart PC, and voila, internet is back. Using the desktop for other purposes doesn't give the same issues but when I start using torrents, it losses internet again after just a few minutes. Restart the PC and internet is back.

Any thoughts?

winsock corruption maybe?

When you lose internet try running these in an administrator command window and see if you get internet back:

netsh winsock reset

netsh int ipv4 reset

netsh int ipv6 reset

ipconfig /flushdns

Had a similar issue a while back, not torrents, but when transferring large files from network ( >70GB), network will suddenly stop, only a reboot fixes it, turns out windows updates installed an old driver, updating the driver fixed it.

In your case if it started having issue on seceond week of the month (windows update is every second tuesday of the month) then check the network drivers

Having a similar issue as well. My desktop PC sometimes loses connectivity on my 5GHz WiFi connection. I can still switch over to the 2.4GHz band though. Not yet sure if it happens when downloads are ongoing.
I have an ASUS Intel(R) Wi-Fi 6 AX200 160MHz card and AFAIK I have the latest driver for it.
Is it possible that the wireless router is the problem? I have PLDT's Huawei HG8145V5 modem/router.

I recently reformatted my desktop. The problem seems to have disappeared albeit momentarily. It went back when I installed uTorrent and started DL'ing torrents. It would intermittently kill my desktop internet connection but all Wi-Fi connections are ok. Only way to fix it is to restart PC.

Weird.

us this instead la

https://www.freedownloadmanager.org/download.htm

That site was caught serving linux malware, so who knows what other junk it's also doing on windows.

https://arstechnica.com/security/2023/09/password-stealing-linux-malware-served-for-3-years-and-no-one-noticed/

Quote
A download site surreptitiously served Linux users malware that stole passwords and other sensitive information for more than three years until it finally went quiet, researchers said on Tuesday.

The site, freedownloadmanager[.]org, offered a benign version of a Linux offering known as the Free Download Manager. Starting in 2020, the same domain at times redirected users to the domain deb.fdmpkg[.]org, which served a malicious version of the app. The version available on the malicious domain contained a script that downloaded two executable files to the /var/tmp/crond and /var/tmp/bs file paths. The script then used the cron job scheduler to cause the file at /var/tmp/crond to launch every 10 minutes. With that, devices that had installed the booby-trapped version of Free Download Manager were permanently backdoored.

qBittorrent is OSS and very tunable.

a NAS with a torrent client is looking pretty good right now lol

Edit: following the comments on the Arstechnica article, it seems like it was around 2017 when FDM became closed source and people started reporting it as Spyware. Either way I certainly wouldn't use it now, and would look at ways to sanitize PC if you currently have it.
