just a warning though.. a simple network set up is also prone to rapid and unwanted malware proliferation
will regular antivirus suffice? thanks!
for known malware yes... but for new undetected ones, not so much.

better to do cascading routers set-up to isolate one network from the other.
that looks... too complicated for me. if ever my friend would prefer that, i think she'd better hire a technician.

^ uLTEra router is also a modem... so it needs to dial-up before it connects.

well, i guess i'll just tell them to be be careful with their internet activities and make sure their anti-virus is updated.

your friend has to be sure to put the lan cable from the neighbor to the WAN port of his router.

so can i just use one of the ports of the ultera modem and connect another router to extend its reach?

Yes, but the Ultera will be the router (DHCP server too)... the added router "router" function has to be turned off and will act like a switch and AP (if may Wifi sya)

Then you're at the mercy of whatever 'rules' exist on the main router.. MAC address filtering, firewall.etc..ie...what if there's no DHCP assignment or the main router only allows 10 IPs....

If there is already a router (such as a PLDT modem-router combo), you have to connect the second wifi-router via its LAN port not the WAN port.

From my POV, the friend only needs the internet... not to be in the same LAN.  hence put it in the WAN port. If said friend doesn't care that other folks from another house has access to his pc, files, printers, devices etc... sure, put it on the normal LAN port and disable any router/dhcp functions.

tnx hungree, i'll check it out.
what I did before was just pluged in my asus wifi router so that it can reach the other room (wifi) but i guess it doesnt work that way, a wifi router within a wifi router.
