Fedora 25
« on: December 23, 2016, 11:35:15 PM »
I am thinking of installing Fedora 25 on my secondary PC currently being used as an HTPC, and uses Windows 10 Professional. i will image the current state of the OS then install Fedora over it.

specs:
Core i3-530
4GB RAM
Radeon 5750
80GB SSD - OS drive
1TB HDD (NTFS, contains data/movies/music etc. will not be touched by the migration)

Is anyone using Fedora 25 GNOME as their daily driver? i am particularly looking at 3 things:

1) Wayland compatibility with apps - especially Google Chrome and XBMC/Kodi. i tested Chrome on a VM in VMWare Player and it was unable to launch. i'm not sure if it's because of the vmware drivers which are messing it up.

2) Ease of working with NTFS partitions and sharing drives for copying files to/from the server to our main desktop and laptop, both running Windows 10.

3) Maintainability and time to set up - as we know Fedora is not setup to be user-friendly out of the box. so far, i know that mp3 decoding is now installed by default as the patents for that have expired. if anyone can point me to some steps on how to setup multimedia playback on Fedora 25 that would be helpful. also other tips and tricks.

Been testing a fedora install in a VM but haven't gotten very far into customizing it, still evaluating stability.
TIA for any feedback and help from you guys! merry christmas  :)

AFAIK, Ubuntu might be easier(?) to setup Kodi on.

i've gone ahead and shrank the windows partition and installed Fedora 25. i was surprised at how easy it was.

updates done but haven't set up multimedia playback, UI tweaks and SSD tuning yet. So far Wayland has been stable. i'm not hopeful chrome will work there (even under XWayland), so probably have to stick to Firefox for streaming.

just to update this i have done the following:

- enabled fstrim timer for weekly TRIM of the SSD
- enabled RPMFusion free and non-free repos and installed gstreamer and gstreamer1 packages
- installed VLC as video player. Kodi currently doesn't have Wayland support, though I haven't tried if it will work in XWayland fallback
- automounted my NTFS data partition

i am looking for a Kodi alternative, or a different music player for audio files, and graphics application for picture slideshows. i do not like rhythmbox.

also Chrome doesn't run under Wayland and XWayland so sticking with Firefox.
EDIT: Chrome 55 works! glad the problem i had was just tied to the VM.

and somewhat surprisingly for Fedora this has been 100% stable, no crashes ever (even SELinux errors are nonexistent)!
