ingat sa sa MS update, Meltdown and Spectre

Microsoft's 'Meltdown' updates are reportedly bricking AMD PCs
https://www.yahoo.com/news/microsoft-apos-apos-meltdown-apos-093400294.html

buti nabasa ko kaagad.  thanks!  medyo iba iba yung timing ng pag update ko.  minsan kaagad agad minsan naman delayed.  pano na kaya yung mga hindi marunong mag stop ng automatic updates?  RIP nalang?

MS has pulled the plug on the AMD patch...

how about the ones who got the updates?  reinstall windows nalang?  probably a good reason to stop microsoft from forcing updates on your pc

There should be a restore point made prior to installing the update that you can use to roll it back.

No B350-based or matx/itx boards included. Boo.

Also doubtful AMDs announced price reductions (~30%) for Ryzen will reach SG in time for Ryzen 2 release.

i think the problem was the rigs became unbootable after the update, necessitating an image restore/reformat?

Unbootable = stuck on Windows logo at bootup. You should still be able to use the F8 menu before it gets to that point.

The title that said 'bricking' was way exaggerated.

^well, most people nowadays, if you can't open a web-browser, it's already broken...

and goes to show that Windows 10 is actually quite stable, and people rarely encounter problems wherein it doesn't boot that you need to reformat.

a few years ago, that will not be called 'bricking', they will just say that it will trash your windows installation or something like that.

i was wondering if F8 would still work.  so a system restore would still be an option.  i thought even F8 would not work

Creepy malware is creepy!

https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2018/01/man-charged-in-malware-mystery-that-allegedly-spied-on-mac-users-for-13-years/

Aside from stealing the usual passwords and banking info, it detects when someone searches for porn and then starts recording them lol wtf! And apparently the malware has been active and undetected for 13 years!

wala nang F8 sa windows 10 diba? unless you tell to reboot into safe mode/recovery previously?
EDIT: i remembered older AMD procs nga pala yung mainly affected nito, i doubt they'll be running win10 haha

Recovery disk or the install media will let you boot into a recovery mode (Troubleshoot option). If you don't have those, W10 should automatically go into a recovery menu after three consecutive failed boots, so just start the PC up, and when it gets stuck at the Windows logo just hit the reset button and let it boot again until you get the recovery menu.

Re: F8: F8/Shift-F8 still works on W10, the problem is the window to input it is very small because a modern PC with UEFI and SSD boots super fast, but if your fingers are fast and/or you get lucky you might just get the boot menu lol.

IIRC what the "legacy" startup option actually does is add an artificial delay when booting up, so the system will recognize your F8 input. This was present in earlier versions of Windows, but MS took it out in order to make W10 boot faster.

Spectre sucks. It affects pretty much everything, it's more insidious and harder to fix than Meltdown and the microcode updates that have been released seem to either break things or slow them down significantly.
