Title: Is 3G internet available on a Smart Buddy Prepaid SIM
Post by: r8dhex on July 29, 2009, 10:17:09 AM
I have a smart buddy prepaid sim, a 3G phone Sony K610, and a laptop.

I'm trying to get 3G internet access through the phone, I have a 3G signal, but all I can get is GPRS connection.

Is this possible with a Smart Buddy or Smart Gold SIM? Or is it only available with SmartBro?

If it's possible, what are the settings?

I'm using my Nokia 5800 as a 3G modem for my laptop. Make sure that your network settings is set to 3G/HSPA/ UMTS before establishing a 3G net connection on your laptop.

I tried it on my K610i and with my Smart buddy sim, I used the SE PC suite to connect to the internet The PC suite indicated I am connected to the GPRS network. However, the cellphone indicated I am connected via 3G.

Bandwith tests on speedtest.net indicated I am getting 500kbps download speed, 50kbps upload and 380ms ping times, all on the Makati PLDT server.

I transferred the sim to my Huawei E160 modem. Connecting and again testing on speedtest.net, indicated I only had 350kbps maximum download bandwidth but also 200kbps upload speed. The ping time was less than half previously @170ms. Using the utility MDMA, while connected indicated I am connected via HSDPA.

@motion55

how did your cellphone indicate that you're connected to 3g?

When I'm using the SE PC suite, I get 2 available connections, 1 is using the APN "smartbro", the other is "internet", using the "smartbro" connection fails, only the "internet" connection works.

This is taken from the K610i user's guide:

The 3G icon appears on my phone when there is a 3G signal.

yeah, that's what I have too, that's how I know that I have a 3G signal. However, SE PC Suite says I'm only using GPRS, and Windows networking says I'm connected at 115.2kbps.

Whether  HSDPA, UMTS, or GPRS, the bottom line  is how much bandwidth can you get. If you can get 256kbps to 384kbps average then you have at least a 3G (UMTS) connection. HSDPA will allow you get download speeds greater than 384kbps.
