^ Err I wasn't asking for advice, just ranting about how the 8800GT (or maybe the blame here lies with Windows) handled the 4k monitor. I've used the same DVI->HDMI adapter and cable setup with a newer card and it works flawlessly (*cue sound bite from Warcraft I installer*).

It is possible to get it to work by going into safe mode and editing the normal mode resolution in the registry, but if I change monitors and go back to the 4k it reverts back into trying to start at 4k (and thus a black screen). IMO really stupid behavior.

Oh, about that, some cables are one way, DVI->HDMI will not work as HDMI->DVI even though hdmi and dvi are electronically compatible, some cables skimp on wires that is needed for it to be a vice-versa connector, maybe you can check that. If you are still determined for that setup to work

most likely none of the available configuration of the monitor is supported by the card, since it's the card that picks the resolution based on the EID that the monitor gives (I think it defaults to 640x480 if it gives an invalid EID), what connector do you use? VGA? HDMI? DP? if your 8800GT have DVI, try using a DVI->HDMI adapter.

to compare raspberry pi uses 1080p on my 4k monitor, also the original Intel compute stick also uses 1080p both uses HDMI, and an old nuc uses 2560x1440 with DisplayPort, but only 1080p with HDMI

that's because the max resolution supported by the card is only 2560x1600. see GeForce 8800GT Specifications

Yup I was aware of the 8800GT's max res. I was sort of expecting the card to try the panel at 1080P or its highest supported resolution instead of attempting to run at native res.

@motion55
could the mounting screws be a little bit long that it hits the PCB of the HDD?
that would only be the logical way I can think of ;)
